How is the review process conducted?
For the visual artist review, slides are presented three at a time, in three banks of three. Digital images on CD are projected singly, in sequence. Videos and DVDs are usually presented after the still images. In the preliminary round, panelists are shown all of the submitted work samples in one relatively quick pass in order to give them an idea of the field of entries they will consider. In the second, more deliberate round of viewing, panelists are asked to vote using a 1-2-4-5 scale, with 1 as the strongest rating. (3’s are removed to prevent fence-sitting.) During the second round, the staff will identify the middle slide of each bank to give panelists an idea of the title, medium, dimensions, and date of the work on view. Artists receiving a 1 and/or a low cumulative numerical rating are eligible to go on to the next stage of the process.
