The ranking of NCAA basketball teams is determined by a teams shedule and record. If one team plays a bunch of garbage teams in the beginning of the season, non-conference team games, and win them all they are not going to be number 1 in the country just because they are undefeated but if they played tough teams to beat during the non-conference games they more than likely will be ranked in the top ten if not the top five.
