How is the new Detention Center benefiting Cherokee County?
The Department of Corrections mandated that Cherokee County construct a facility that met standard state codes or face severe sanctions, including possible condemnation. Past trends revealed that we paid over 200,000 dollars a year to surrounding counties to house our overflow inmate population. The new facility reversed this trend in that Cherokee County is now paid by other counties to house their inmates. In addition, we have entered into a contract to house federal inmates, at a cost of $55 per inmate/per day and we average 40 federal inmates each day.
