How is the name properly pronounced?
In the UK, the emphasis is on the second syllable, the third syllable being a very short “nert”. In North America, the emphasis is often on the first syllable, the third syllable being pronounced “not”. The descendants of James Lycurgus Arbuthnot pronounce the name “Arbernot” which is not otherwise heard. (Arbuthnot has a different value from Arbernot under the soundex system).
