Jesus Christ Superstar started out as a hit record album, using singers, rather than actors, to showcase the songs. Christ was sung by Ian Gillan, the Deep Purple vocalist, and other contemporary rock singers also had parts. The band consisted largely of highly experienced rock and pop session musicians and there were several hit songs before the show was actually produced on stage. When it hit the stage, the orchestrations and layout of the band was such that it became necessary to amplify the singers considerably more than was normal in a musical.
