How is the Morongo Band of Mission Indians self-reliant?
In 1997, Morongo opened one of the largest Shell gasoline stations in the country. The Morongo Shell station made national and international headlines in 2000 when the tribe thanked California voters for their support by offering gas at $1 a gallon. In 1999 they also opened an A&W Restaurant and a Coco’s Restaurant. During the same year the tribe acquired Hadley Fruit Orchards.
