How is the Migrant Education Program (MEP) funded?
Migrant Education Program is funded entirely with federal dollars given to the State Department of Education. A funding formula is used that is based upon numbers of eligible Migrant students enrolled in that state in the previous year. The state in turn has developed a formula based on the number of migrant students identified by each region as well as the number of priority students served.No local or state taxes are used for the MEP. The Migrant Education Program is part Title I-C of the No Child Left Behind Act. The Migrant Education Program (MEP) is authorized by Part C of Title I of the ESEA. The MEP provides formula grants to SEA’s to establish or improve programs for children of qualifying Migrant workers. These grants assist states in improving educational opportunities for Migrant children to help them succeed in the regular school program, attain grade-level proficiency, and meet the challenging content and student performance standards that all children are expected to mast
