How is the mens sperm collected in the IVF treatment?
Men’s sperm are collected in a cup…basically a self service thing. Women’s eggs are monitored via blood tests to measure estridol levels and ultrasounds to view the follicle growth in the ovaries. Biggest risk is for Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome but there is also a very small risk of infection as there is with any invasive procedure. There is risks that the eggs may not freeze or may not survive thaw. Zygotes are fertilized in a petri dish which is cultured to be a good environment. Dependant on the volume, morphology and motility of the sperm, they eggs may be fertilized using ICSI where the sperm is injected directly into the egg or they may just put the egg and sperm in the same petri dish and let them do what nature intended them to do.
