How is the Martian Manhunter involved in this story?
Englehart: I took the history of the JLA as expressed pretty straight-forwardly, but I gave them self-awareness, shall we say. It becomes clear to the Martian Manhunter at this point in JLA history that maybe getting rid of Batman, Superman, Green Lantern and Flash in favor of these guys was not Aquaman’s best idea ever. So the Martian Manhunter takes these four guys out of Detroit and into the Canadian wilderness and puts them through a boot camp. I play with it throughout the story that they already know they’re considered second-rate guys. It bugs them. Steel, particularly, is not at all happy. With his pedigree, he didn’t want all his bones and flesh replaced but here he is. He finally gets his chance at the Justice League and he gets Vibe. He doesn’t get Flash and Superman.
