How is the MaineCoast Protection Initiative related to the federal Coastal and EstuarineLand Conservation Program?
The Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP), established in 2002 by the US Department of Commerce, provides funds to states and municipalities to protect important coastal and estuarine areas that have significant conservation, recreation, ecological, historical, or aesthetic values, or that are threatened by conversion from their natural or recreational state to other uses, giving priority to lands which can be effectively managed and protected, and that have significant ecological value. The State of Maine CELCP Plan was developed in conjunction with the development of the Maine Coast Protection Initiative (MCPI) because of the significant overlap in the purposes of each effort and the opportunity to engage crucial stakeholders in the planning process. Maine’s CELCP plan establishes conservation priorities and the process and guidelines to be used to evaluate and recommend coastal protection projects for federal CELCP land acquisition funding.
