How is the MA in Organizational Communication similar to and different from an MBA?
Both the MA in Organizational Communication and a Masters of Business Administration provide an understanding of organizational theories and their application to contemporary work life. For example, both programs offer courses that address issues such as organizational leadership, change, power, diagnosis, etc. They differ, however, in terms of their focus and desired outcomes. An MBA provides a specialized focus on the skills necessary to be successful in business administration and management, treating communication as one such skill. The MA in Organizational Communication takes a different approach to communication, considering it much more fundamental to the overall process of organizing. From this perspective, communication is not simply a tool that can increase productivity within organizations, but rather the very process by which individuals come to understand each other and the organizational context surrounding them.
