How is the heater bypass tube connected to the water pump of a 1998 Dodge Dakota pickup?

I replaced the water pump on my wife’s ’97 Dakota 4×4 with 3.9 and had no problem with the bypass tube. You do have to hold it in while putting it all together, definitely a little difficult, but once it was all buttoned up, it never leaked.
