How is the heat of fusion used to protect against frost damage?

I believe that heat of fusion could be used to protect something from adverse effects of changing temperature through distributing heat evenly (to cause near uniform contraction in a metal tool, for instance), or to keep something from decreasing below the freezing point of watever substance is being used for a short period of time. Coating a substance with a freezing liquid will keep that object at the liquid’s temperature until the liquid can effectively freeze. I’d imagine some animals might use this feature to help slow down external cooling processes, but I’m not completely sure.
