How is the GRE Program recommending that departments interpret my analytical writing score?
This section replaces the former AWA section and will take some use by admissions committees to develop stronger sense of how much weight to put into the scores. In otherwords, only time will tell how we end up using it. Some admissions committees disregard this section entirely, while others consider it vital, and yet others use it in conjunction with other required application materials to develop understanding of a candidate’s communication skills. Schools that practice holistic evaluation that includes GREV, AWA, essays, reference questions about communications ability, transcript indicators of communications, other English tests, and even personal interviews have many indicators to use when determining communications ability. The new AWA will just be one of them. The overal question of how the new GRE will affect applicants is important to look into if you have a choice about which version to take.
As a performance assessment, the GRE analytical writing section provides a snapshot of your analytical writing ability before entry into graduate school. The Guide to the Use of GRE Scores is being revised to include information on the interpretation of analytical writing scores. This information includes descriptions of the characteristic analytical writing abilities reflected at each score level.
