In fact there are two distinct sets of firmware. The normal board firmware is kept in Atmel EEPROMs. This firmware may be upgraded in system. The board also has failsafe firmware in a socketed Xilinx XC17256D one-time programmable PROM. The prom used at power-up is determined by the position of the failsafe jumper located in the top left hand corner of the board. With the jumper removed or in the off position the PIF configuration is taken from the Atmel prom. With the jumper in the on position the PIF configuration is taken from the Xilinx prom.
