How is the Environment Agency involved in wildlife conservation?

We aid wildlife conservation indirectly through regulating activities that could threaten the environment. We reduce pollution to air, water and land and we manage flood defences, water resources and freshwater fisheries. We are the lead organisation for many wetland habitats and species under the United Kingdom Biodiversity Action Plan and as members of the UK Biodiversity Action Group, we have taken an active role at a national level. We are implementing the Birds and Habitats Directives by ensuring our own work and the activities we regulate do not impact on protected land. The Water Framework Directive will ensure we take further account of wildlife when reporting on water quality.
