How is the economy affecting law firm and corporate law department efforts to retain and promote diverse attorneys?
Valz: I wouldn’t say, in terms of attorneys who have departed Yahoo! in the last year-and-a-half, that there’s been a disproportionate impact on minority attorneys. But when you don’t have as much hiring, then obviously you can’t provide as many opportunities to minority attorneys. Weng: The economy has been so consuming for corporations and law firms that I’d have to bet that the aggregate prioritization of their diversity efforts has suffered. Gizewski: With the instability in the market, we’ve really doubled down and tripled down on our diversity and inclusion efforts. Our budget for our diversity committee has gone from about $250,000 two years ago to about $750,000 this past fiscal year because we believe that these challenging times require us to work even harder to retain, attract, and develop the best talent.
