How is the DPF cleaned?
The stored soot particulates must be regularly burned off in order to prevent blocking of the DPF. The DPF system can clean itself and this is often referred to as Automatic Regeneration. Most drivers will not be aware the regeneration cycle is occurring. The amount of stored soot detected in the DPF determines when regeneration is required, so driving conditions which create more soot will require the DPF to regenerate more often. The car’s computer or Electronic Control Module (ECM) initiates a self cleaning process of the DPF.
