Ok, you want an explanation and I’ll give it to you in agonizing detail At the front wheel or the output transmission shaft is a pulse generator, technically known as a Hall Effect Sensor. This is basically a small magnet with a tiny wire wrapped around, but not touching the magnet. Rotating on the wheel hub or tranny shaft is small ferrous (magnetic) metal plugs or lobes (triggers), which pass very close to the pulse generator. When it does, it generates a magnetic field in the wires inside of the generator. After the trigger passes by, the magnetic field collapses causing a tiny electrical pulse to be generated in the wire. The tranny shaft may only generate one pulse per revolution while a front wheel sensor usually generates many more (13 per revolution on my ’84 Kawasaki Voyager). These electrical pulses travel along the wire coming from the pulse generator to a small micro computer (CPU), most likely inside the dash.
