How is the Conservative Partys new group in the European Parliament getting on?
They have always isolated themselves. They had sat with the biggest group the European People’s Party, the Christian democrats. They’ve isolated themselves because they’re sat with a group of homophobes, people who actually promote homophobia in parliament. Climate change deniers. It’s a strange, strange group and they have lost all respect. Can you imagine David Cameron, from that group, as a prime minister working with other prime ministers like Zapatero, like Socrates – impossible. They’ve put themselves on the fringes of Europe but in layman’s terms I’d say this – they’ve got no clout and no vision and there’s no unity about what they should do with membership of the EU. They’ve got to explain that to millions and millions of people. There is a riot about to erupt within the Conservative Party in Europe if and when the Lisbon treaty is ratified this weekend in Ireland. Because they’ll want Cameron to have a referendum on it. This is something that always comes back to bite the arse
