How is the chorus different than an a cappella group?
With the chorus, you have a lot more anonymity because it’s a larger group. It’s more technical being in the chorus. It’s organized and run by students, but the conductor is someone we hired. We also sing different music. For a cappella, you have the background singing and one soloist who is the focus and in the chorus, it’s more that the ensemble as the focus. Also in a cappella, we sing mostly contemporary music, with some oldies mixed in. We sing songs from all over the generations from Motown to Wyclef Jean. In chorus, we sing Magicals (music from the renaissance) and songs by Brahms and other classical composers. Q: What’s the hardest part about singing a cappella? A: Expectations. Different members have different reasons for membership and different views for the group. The hardest part has to be creating the marriage between someone who wants to take the group very seriously and someone who is more into it as a stress release. Expectations even follow into picking soloists: find
