How is the Arab Spring changing the Arab League?
It is too early to tell how exactly the Arab League will be shaped by the Arab Awakening but what is sure is that change has begun and more is on the way. We’re already seeing more forceful involvement by the Arab League such as in the Syrian uprising. Condemnation followed by warnings followed by sanctions and more recently refusal to back down in the face of Assad’s resistance to conform with its demands. Back in September we saw a unified front in support of the Palestinian demand for full membership at the United Nations. The Arab League is acting quickly and more decisively than ever before. As leaders change, their representation at the Arab League will change as well. My guess is that countries such as Qatar and the UAE might want to play a more prominent role in the future as they emerge as the most stable and the most prosperous of the region. Saudi Arabia, once its political situation settles down, might also play a more prominent role than the other smaller developing nation
