How is the amount awarded to an applicant decided?
The bursaries are awarded according to guidelines and a points system drawn up by the Joint Committee on Childcare for Students, which compares annual income and expenditure with Ofsted-registered childcare costs and other outgoings. The Committee also consider: • Whether the student’s partner is working (normally bursaries are not awarded to students whose partner is at home and therefore available to look after the child, but exceptions may be made, for example if the partner is studying part-time or taking language classes). • Whether the partner is also a student (at Cambridge or elsewhere). • The particular course the student is taking (for example PGCE students on teaching practice or PhD students who are writing-up may need additional childcare). • Other family circumstances (personal problems, financial difficulties, illness of child or parent, size of the family).
