How is the ACT writing exam scored and what do the scores on the exam mean?
The ACT writing exam is scored by two readers. Each reader places a grade on the essay using a scale of 1-6. When a grader places a grade between 1-3, he/she is indicating that the essay is weak. The grade that the student sees, which is also the grade on the advisement sheet, is a combination of the two readers’ grades. That means that student who received a 6 on the ACT writing exam had two readers who gave the exam a 3, i.e. each indicated that the exam is weak. In order to place into English 101, a student must receive a 7 or higher on the ACT writing exam.
