When you do daily blood glucose tests, you get different readings throughout the day, which help you make adjustments in your medication or diet as necessary. However, for long-term diabetes management, you need to look at your overall progress. That’s where the A1c test comes into play. It measures your average blood glucose level over the past three months or so. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), you should have an A1c test done two to four times a year.
