How is technology affecting the communication patterns of professionals?
The two youngest engineers both claim not to have noticed much change, which should be expected since they’ve only been with their respective companies for a short period of time. The two older engineers both commented on the fact that improvements in technology have made employees more connected because they have improved tools to communicate with people in other locations. It is interesting to note that the interview data shows that face to face communication is largely favored over phone and telemarketing. That data emphasizes that the impact of technology is still limited, and normal oral communication is still important. It would seem that the biggest impact technology has had is based on the shift of focus from oral communication as a whole to written communication. Digital innovation has made written communication much more effective and continues to innovate, as the interviews point out.
