How is Tasmania governed?
Tasmania has a “bi-cameral” (or ‘two-house’) parliament which was established in 1854. The lower house is called the House of Assembly, and the upper house is called the Legislative Council. Generally the state is steered by the lower house – the Premier will be a Member of the House of Assembly (MHA). The upper house tends to function in an important reviewing role. Five MHA’s are elected from each of five electorates in the state: Braddon, Bass, Lyons, Denison and Franklin. The electoral boundaries for the Legislative Council are different and there are a greater number of divisions. See the Parliament of Tasmania’s WWW site for more information on Tasmania’s system of government.
