How is sustainable investing (SI) different from socially responsible investing (SRI)?

Traditional SRI generally involves screening all the major categories of social “irresponsibility” and owning only those securities which survive the screening process. Sustainable Investing walks the fine line between a fanatical effort to rid one’s portfolio of every company that does anything that someone, somewhere thinks might be a sin, and the “Anything for a buck”, short term profit mentality so prevalent in today’s culture. We believe that there is a middle way. We focus on global, environmental, economic, and spiritual sustainability. We carefully research and identify SRI funds that are in line with Abacus’s core strategy of passive index investing, and only invest in those which we believe have a strong potential for high investor returns, but not at the expense of environmental and social well-being.
