How is supergirl related to superman?
Supergirl is a very messy character when it comes to continuity, and relations. The primary version of Supergirl that is currently in comics and the version on Smallville during season 7, is Kara Zor-El. She is Superman’s cousin from Krypton. Her father is Zor-El. Superman’s father on Krypton was Jor-El, so they are brothers. Women of Krypton take their father’s name as a surname of sorts. There have been other versions of Supergirl though. In 1986, DC comics did a huge change of their comic continuity, the Crisis on Infinite Earths. At that time, they killed off the Supergirl from Krypton, and afterwards, they mandated that Superman is the Sole survivor of Krypton. When DC wanted to make a new Supergirl, it got really weird. They created a protoplasmic entity from a pocket dimension, created by a good Lex Luthor based on the DNA of his deceased wife Lana Lang.
