How is sport Judo good for self defence?
Rob, you have pretty good case for Judo in answers that you have so far (I’ll have a few comments at the end). However, I think your question is really a combination of two questions that have slightly different answers: 1.Is sport Judo TECHNIQUE good for self-defense? 2.Is sport Judo PRACTICE good for self-defense? #1: Sport Judo exists in three styles more or less known in the US: Olympic Judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and (sport) SAMBO (Combat SAMBO is a different thing in part developed from pre-Judo Japanese jujutsu as well as from Kodokan Judo; Kosen Judo is limited to a few Japanese universities, as far as I know). Those styles are differ in there applicability for self-defense “as-is”. Self-defense also can be of different flavors: fighting off bully on a schoolyard (I’m not diminishing it a bit – I had my share of problems of this sort) is not the same as resisting robbery attempt and both very different from repelling assassination attempt.
