How is solar electricity generated?
A. Energy from the sun can be directly converted to electricity using solar cells, also known as photovoltaics or PVs. The solar energy knocks electrons loose from their atoms, allowing the electrons to flow through the material to produce electricity. Although individual PV cells produce only small amounts of electricity, PV modules (see “What are “PVs”) are manufactured with varying electrical outputs ranging from a few watts to more than 100 watts of direct current (DC) electricity.
