How is serotonin syndrome treated?
The first step is to stop any medications that could be causing a serotonin overload, under your doctor’s guidance. In most cases, symptoms resolve within 24 hours. Treatment may also include: • Fluids given intravenously (IV) • Muscle relaxants to reduce agitation, muscle spasms and stiffness • Medication that blocks serotonin production • Medications to control heart rate and blood pressure You may need to stay in the hospital for observation and treatment.If symptoms are severe, you might need a breathing tube and medicine to paralyze the muscles to help prevent further muscle damage and other complications. Can it be prevented?
