How is RPI cutting back?
I ran across this very interesting article in the New York Times about how schools are cutting back to save money. Some interesting proposals (from various schools): • Get rid of phones in one department: $1,100 per month • Virtual swim meet: $900 • Scaling back on window washing: $22,300 • Eliminate ESPN and HBO: $75,000 • Cut back one day of orientation: $50,000 • Trayless Tuesdays: $30,000 per semester • Use tap water at university events: $10,000 • Cutting room voicemail for students, so no new equipment: $40,000 • Hire students for professional positions: $725,000 per year Makes you wonder why we still have room phones, ESPN, voicemail, a week-and-a-half orientation, and no Trayless Tuesdays. Hmmm… Perhaps we should be thinking about these types of cutbacks. RPI has already cut RA compensation by half, so they could move right up the chain from there. I can’t wait to see what the next cuts will be!
