PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – State and city offices and many businesses will be closed for Victory Day, the anniversary of the end of World War II. Rhode Island is the last state to recognize Victory Day, which it observes Monday. The holiday was established in 1946 by President Harry Truman. It’s commonly known as Victory over Japan Day, or V-J Day because of its association with the Japanese surrender. There have been several unsuccessful attempts to change the holiday’s name or to drop it altogether. Critics say it’s discriminatory because the state doesn’t celebrate the victory over Germany. They also say it makes no sense because Japan is now an American ally. While many people will be taking long weekends, federal offices are still open and mail delivery continues.
