How is Redistricting done?
Minnesota statutes (M.S. 204B.135 and M.S. 204B.14) and Minneapolis City Charter provide the method and timeframes to conduct the redistricting process in the City of Minneapolis. Adoption of the redistricting plan requires approval by a majority of the Redistricting Commission members. The Commission forwards the plan to the City Council. The City Council has no power to change the Ward boundaries of the Redistricting Commission plan, and is required to pass an ordinance outlining the new Ward and precinct boundaries. Immediately after the adoption of the City ward and precinct boundaries, the County prepares a County Commissioner redistricting plan. Concurrent with the County process, the Minneapolis Redistricting Commission begins redistricting the six Minneapolis Park and Recreation district boundaries. City Charter states that the Park boundaries in place during the 1970’s shall be retained as nearly as practicable in readjusting the Park boundaries.
