How is Red Baron famous and how does he die?
A few years ago it was proven to this contributor’s satisfaction that Sergeant Cedric Popkin of the Australian Army killed the Red Baron. The two other Australians each fired their Lewis guns at him as Brown pursued him over a hill. On the other side of the hill, Popkin fired a long burst at him with his Vickers gun. Roy Brown was still on his tail firing with his two Vickers guns, but the range was so close that the Baron would have been killed instantly if one of his bullets had hit. Instead, the Baron maneuvered his plane to evade Brown, landed it, and died in the cockpit with the motor running. Despite this evidence, Canada has no plans to take the kill away from Roy Brown.
