How is Ramadan celebrated in Canada? What is the level of interest in the holy month?
Ramadan is the month in which Muslims living in Canada convene the most and embrace one another. The majority of Muslims gather in mosques along with their families close to iftar time. There are lectures delivered following iftar in a language that can be understood by the majority of the congregation throughout Ramadan. We used the phrase, “a language that can be understood by most,” because, depending on the ethnic make-up of the congregation, the lecture can be in English (if the congregation is mostly Indian or Pakistani), Arabic (if the congregation is from Arab countries outside of North Africa) or Arabic, Turkish or French (the North African congregation generally speaks French like its their mother tongue.) The mosques in Canada fill up during the month of Ramadan.
