Where does photosynthesis occur? Photosynthesis is a process in plants which has many purposes. A photon, the smallest particle of electromagnetic radiation energy from sunlight, goes into a plant cell and hits the wall of an organelle called the chloroplast. Chloroplast are part of the cellular machinery inside plant cells, and they produce energy in plants, just like mitochondria do in animal cells. A chloroplast is its own compartment, like a cell within a cell. Its inside is called the lumen and it is filled with stacks of thylakoids, which are disks connected and piled on each other in towers called grana. The surface of these globular disks is where the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis occur.
