How is non biodegradable substances harmful for the environment?
Substances that can be broken down by biological processes are biodegradable. Substances that are not broken down by biological processes are non-biodegradable. some substances biodegradable and some non-biodegradable why because substances are broken down by enzyme action. These enzymes are specific i.e. Specific enzymes are needed for the breakdown of particular substances. Micro-organisms do not have enzymes to breakdown plastic, glass, detergents etc; but they do have enzymes to breakdown paper, leather etc. non-biodegradable substances affect the environment. They may enter the food chain and harm the organisms in the higher trophic levels. (by bio-magnification) e.g. Pesticides like DDT Non-biodegradable substances like radioactive wastes, lead, mercury etc. affect the health of all living organisms. example:The breaking down of “garbage” in an uncontrolled environment releases toxins in the form of gasses, vapours, salts and solids. For instance, if there was a heap of old elect
