How is Nietzsches concept of the ubermensch similar or different than the Romantic hero?
They are similar in that they both reject certain societal norms, etc… The romantic hero does not necessarily affirm his/her own existence unabashedly and completely. Nietzsche’s overman affirms his/her existence bar none. Alexander Nehamas writes something to the extent of, Nietzsche’s overman affirms life, the mistakes the tragedies, what most people would regret because he/she knows that if it were not for those events of the past what the overman exists as would not be possible. Each event of the past, including the death of each star, the rape of each innocent child and the glory of each human acheivement are affirmed by the overman because without any one of them the overman would not be possible.
