How is Midwestern University involved?
The university will purchase land on the campus and build a sports medicine clinic that will be used by the athletes, as well as serving Valley residents. Dr. Kathleen Goeppinger, president and CEO of the university, said the clinic will provide opportunities for students to gain experience alongside faculty, who are physicians. The clinic will involve medical specialties from osteopathic manipulative work for muscle injuries to dental and podiatry. Midwestern doesn’t offer sports medicine certification, although Goeppinger said the university is exploring its options. When will all of this be open? Tentative plans shoot for 2010, although detailed agreements must hammered out in the next six or so months. How much is this going to cost taxpayers? The agreement puts much of the expense with the developer. The city has agreed to rebate taxes for USA Basketball athletes staying at the campus’ hotel.
