How is marine algae the most important element in fighting climate change?
Marine Algae are the main organism of oxygen gas production and they are the primary producers of food for marine life. Starting with photosynthesis the carbon in the carbon dioxide can be traced through the largest marine ecosystem. Most of the animals of the sea depend either directly or indirectly on marine algae for food. The length of time that that carbon can be trace in the animal life sea gives you an idea of the mass of carbon that is stored in animal flesh. The carbon can also be traced to many other birds and mammals that feed on these organisms. As long as the carbon is in the bodies animals of the sea it is not in the atmosphere. Of course these animal carry on respiration and contribute carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. It doesn’t take much imagination to see the huge impact that marine algae has on climate change. Algae direct carbon out of the air and into the marine ecosystem.
