Just think that he is a dried fruit that ran out of juice. His intention in splitting his soul is to create Horcruxes. Basically, a Horcrux is the term used for an object in which a person has concealed part of his soul. In creating a Horcrux, one cannot die even if his body is attacked and destroyed because part of his soul remains intact and undamaged. To create a Horcrux, one must commit murder, thereby splitting his soul. This disattached part of the soul must be transferred into an object through a spell. The object which is used as a vessel for the soul is called a Horcrux. The Dark Lord committed murder in an uncountable number of times.
