Thickness is gauged in ounces per square foot. Most holsters for medium to large frame guns are crafted from 7/8 or 8/9 ounce leather. This means that the leather weights between 7 & 8 ounces per square foot. A typical piece of 8/9 ounce leather is approximately 1/4″ thick.
