How is kyphosis treated?
Treatment decisions are based on the patient’s age, severity of the deformity and the presence of pain. For an angle of less than sixty degrees many authorities recommend exercises to increase back flexibility. Braces may be indicated for patients with an angle greater than sixty degrees, although there is some controversy if braces are effective for angles greater than seventy-five degrees. Bracing may either stop the progression of the curve or actually improve the curve. Surgical treatment is relatively rare for this condition and would be considered for patients with a severe angle, cosmetic deformity, unacceptable pain and possible further worsening. How is kyphosis prevented? Since the condition is idiopathic, there is no prevention.
