How is Kigurumi performed in Japan?
As stated earlier, the actual definition of Kigurumi can encompass any type of masked and suited portrayal of a character. However, a review of several websites and web searches reveals that the word “Kigurumi” is starting to become closely identified with the portrayal of anime/manga/game style characters through the use of suits, masks and costumes. This type of Kigurumi is a fast growing trend in Japan and elsewhere. It should be noted that some (but not all) Kigurumi hobbyist are males who are portraying female characters. While some people may be bothered by this fact, such a practice is consistent in both the art of theatre and Japanese tradition. Originally in European theatre, all acting roles whether male or female were performed by men because it was against European culture and expectations for females to act.
