Africans were easily visible yes. They also didn’t have any where to run to as the native population were less welcoming. They were probably easier to obtain – Europeans bought them from African dealers on the coast generally. Africans were probably physically stronger though not resistant to European diseases. Also slavery was not something the natives practiced to a large degree and perhaps the colonists didnt want to upset the native americans at a time when they were not strong enough to resist an onslaught. Originally European indentured servants were used but a mixture of climate and shortage in numbers made this unfeasable. Finally Africa had a seemingly endless supply of hapless victims. There werent enough locals.
