How is it possible to plant trees in the desert?
There are huge underground water deposits in the desert, called aquifers, which the tree roots can access once they have grown sufficiently. These aquifers that exist below the Sahara desert cover an area of over 2 million square kilometers. Manmade oases are using these aquifers. Combining traditional irrigation systems with advanced agricultural techniques, planting trees in the desert is not impossible. In the United Arab Emirates, more than 130 million trees have been planted by Sheikh Zayed in the desert over the last decade.
