You burn mor ethan 1500 calories per day if you are an average sized person (heck you can be almost sedentary and burn ~1500 cals per day). All our bodily functions require energy from breathing to sleeping to sitting upright at your desk. You should calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) which is the bare minimum calories your body needs to do the basic (or basal) functions of life. Working out at the gym is awesome but it is not really just a way to make your food calories go away. So my answer is good news for you. If you areburning 500cals at the gym and your BMR is say 1500 calories and you eat about 1500 calories per day than you have bruned 500 extra calories should lose ~1 pound per week.
