How is it harder to take care of underweight babies?
My daughter was born prematurely (just over 3 lbs) and it was more difficult in the beginning. First, if the baby has a low birth-weight due to prematurity or illness, there is the concern on whether or not the baby is healthy. I was very fortunate that my daughter was very healthy when she was born, she just had to gain weight. That’s the second concern — weight gain. I remember counting each and every ounce (some days each and every gram!) that she gained, or lost, and scruitinizing over it. It was very important for my daughter to start gaining weight quickly so that her health would be good and we could take her home from the hospital quicker. Another concern that we have with low birth-weight babies is that they usually do not have as much body fat as average sized babies, so it’s more of a challenge for them to regulate their own body temperature. With preemies, parents and caregivers need to be extra vigilent to keep the baby warm at all times as extra calories can be lost keep
